There’s a place for everyone

One of our lovely learners, has bravely shared her experience of the Recovery & Wellbeing College, her stand-out courses and how she feels the college is a place for everyone – and we couldn’t agree more!
“I was introduced to the Recovery & Wellbeing College by my wonderful support worker at the time. It took me over a year to pluck up the courage to enrol. I’ve lived with anxiety and depression since I was 16 years old, along with a number of other health problems. I’m also on an ADHD waiting list, and I’ve been through a marriage breakup. Before I attended, I was extremely nervous, anxious, and terrified — I had no idea what to expect or how people would be towards me.
I think the first course I attended was Fun with Felt. Everyone on the course was really lovely, and after I introduced myself and spoke a little about my story, a lady came and gave me a hug! I knew I was in the right place. It really is the most welcoming and friendliest place I’ve ever been—you’re valued as an individual.
There are a couple of courses that stand out to me, one being Living with ADHD. This course blew my mind—it really opened my eyes to certain things I do and the way I think. The other learners on the course put words to things which I couldn’t, which made me feel normal and accepted. The facilitators were absolutely fantastic women who gave helpful advice and tips to help me cope. I don’t think anyone wanted the course to end—I know I didn’t.
Another course that impacted me was Mindful Mondays: Expressive Art with the amazing Carolyn from Mindful Maker. This incorporated mindful doodling, which I’ve done my own adapted version of……Zentangle, especially during COVID, but I never knew it had a name. These sessions reignited something in me. They helped me quiet my busy mind, and with the support and encouragement I’ve received, I’ve realised the work I produce is something to be proud of—not something to hide behind closed doors. In the future, I may even be exhibiting my work at a venue in Dewsbury.
I’d definitely recommend the college to others. It’s the most warm, welcoming place with no judgement. No one demands anything from you—no pressure. There’s a place for everyone here. :)”
