The Golden Age of Hollywood: Comedy Legends

Mirfield Community Centre, Water Royd Lane, Mirfield, WF14 9SG

Life skills and interests

Join us as we head back in time to the early 20th Century and learn about the Golden Age of Hollywood, and specifically the Golden Age of Comedy!  On this popular five-week course, delivered by Recovery College volunteers Russel and Jana, we will learn about the superstars of early comedy, from the silent era through to the ‘talkies’ and beyond.

We’ll hear about Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, the big three of silent comedy and watch them in action. We’ll learn how the arrival of the talkies sent some stars into decline, and helped others to flourish, and how new faces such as The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, Laurel & Hardy and others added witty dialogue to the classic ‘sight gags’. Throughout, we’ll watch clips of all the greats in action, including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Cary Grant, Abbott & Costello, and many more!

So come along and have a laugh and forget your troubles for a while, as we watch classic comedy movie clips from the very early days of the silver screen right through to the 1960s.

For the final week we’ll watch a full-length classic comedy film from that period. Popcorn provided!  This course is suitable for all learners, whether or not you have previously undertaken a Golden Age of Hollywood course.
