Story of the Week – Different Minds, Shared Strength!

As we celebrate Neurodiversity Week, we’re taking time to honour the many different ways our minds work and the strengths, creativity and insights that neurodivergent people bring to our communities. At our Recovery College, we’re proud to learn with one another and create spaces where we can explore challenges together while celebrating the skills and talents that come from our lived experiences. One of the courses that embodies this spirit is Living Well with ADHD.

“The strength ADHD gives me is seeing my openness to chat to anyone as a gift. Before the course, I thought it was a hindrance.”

Linda, who recently completed our Living Well with ADHD course, summed up something many of us have felt.

At our Recovery College, Living Well with ADHD has been co‑developed by staff, volunteers and learners who live with ADHD or recognise ADHD traits in themselves. Together, we’ve created a space that doesn’t just acknowledge the challenges but celebrates our resourcefulness, creativity, problem‑solving and the many strengths that come with ADHD.

From the moment we begin, we work to build an open, inclusive atmosphere by sharing our own lived experiences. That honesty helps all of us feel safer to explore what ADHD means in our own lives. It’s often where understanding clicks into place, and where we find connection, reassurance and plenty of “lightbulb” moments.

As Linda shared,

“As someone new to learning about ADHD, I really valued the openness and reflections of the course leader’s personal stories. We complemented one another and gave each other space.”

Throughout the course, we explore possible causes and common signs of ADHD and try out practical ‘Top Tips’ that many of us have found helpful. Emma, who previously completed the course, told us,

“Having the workbook with useful strategies and signposting was really helpful.”

A big part of our learning together is discovering how we can be kinder to ourselves, how we can look after our wellbeing, honour how our brains work and feel more confident talking to others about ADHD.

Linda summed up her experience beautifully:

“I have so much more self‑compassion now. I understand there are valid reasons certain tasks felt difficult. I’ve learned to break things down into manageable chunks — and now I can celebrate the small wins.”
