With this in mind our Steering Group has asked us to organise some events to get your feedback and for you to have your say about how the College should develop. Your opinion matters!

We are waiting for further guidance from the NHS, so for now we won’t be changing any measures we have in place. This means if you attend a face to face course you will need to wear a face mask provided by us, have your temperature checked and where possible do a lateral flow test before attending. We always will give you a warm welcome even if you can’t see our welcoming smiles!

Weaving Workshop-God’s Eye
Thursday 3 March, 2-4pm (2 weeks)
Using simple weaving techniques, you will learn how to make a colourful, spiritual object made from yarn called a ‘God’s Eye’ to hang around your home or garden. This craft originates from the Ojo de Dios (Spanish for Eye of God) and is a cultural symbol made by the Huichol Indians of Mexico. The four points are thought to represent earth, fire, air, and water, and the centre provided God’s watchful eye over their people. This two-week workshop will be held in the calming surroundings of the Outback Garden.

Monday 28 February, 1-3pm (2 weeks)
Climate change; does worrying about the planet keep you awake at night? Or are you unsure what all the fuss is about and want to learn more? If so, this course will provide the opportunity for you to discover how we can all make a positive difference, how to change defeatist self-talk and consider how our feelings can generate action. Over two weeks we will look at ways to reduce our own carbon footprint, make our homes more efficient and perhaps save some money as well as the planet!
Women Get Moving!
Tuesdays: 1st, 8th and 15th March, 1:15pm-2:30pm
Ladies – do you need to find ways to get a bit more active? Has exercising become more difficult for you due to illness or disability? Do you want to work off some festive excess after the holidays?! If so, why not come along to one (or more!) of our fun and gentle (and Covid-safe) workout sessions run by our partners at S2R? Each session will provide you with some simple exercises to get you moving while having a laugh with other women!

Improving your sleep
Thursday 10 March 12.30-2.30pm (1 week)
This learning seminar will help you develop your knowledge of sleep, what can impact on your sleep, and most importantly what you can do to sleep better. The session will introduce self-help techniques, such as relaxation, sleep tips and sleep retraining. The idea behind this is to teach you the skills to manage your symptoms and become your own sleep therapist. The session will be facilitated by two friendly psychological wellbeing practitioners.

Free climbing courses from our partner ROKT…
Our partners, ROKT Climbing Gym, are launching more free climbing courses for our Calderdale and Kirklees Learners. Don’t be put off if you have never been climbing before as ROKT climbing courses are suited to beginners. You will have a trained and experienced instructor with you to make sure you are safe and you’ll be part of a group.
In addition to bouldering and climbing, you will also get the chance to try yoga and mindfulness and challenge your mental agility and problem solving skills in one of the ROKT ‘Escape Rooms’.
Did you know climbing is good for your mental and physical health and it is fun as well!

There are lots of face-to-face sessions planned this month, including the return of the Peace Pit Growing Group, some brand-new women-only Thursday Wake Up Call! sessions at Active Bodies in Milnsbridge, and some gentle Wellbeing Walks in Greenhead Park.
S2R will also be running a variety of crafty and creative sessions at their Create Space building on Brook Street in Huddersfield town centre, including an Aromatherapy Shampoo and Conditioner workshop, some Maps and Apps Walk Planning sessions, and a delicious, home-made Chutney Making session with Byron.

S2R Dewsbury area / Your Health in Mind
This month there will be a natural products Aromatherapy course at the Taleem Centre, and some Mindful Social Stitching sessions at Boothroyd Academy. If you fancy getting outside for a breath of fresh air, why not join in with the Friday Wanderers and have a gentle stroll around Crow Nest Park. Or you could join the four-week Mindful Social Stitching course from 12:30 – 2:30pm on Tuesdays at Boothroyd Academy, and learn some new embroidery, couching and Hapa Zome techniques.

Midlife Plot Twist – new course by The Creative Map
Are you female, over 50, not currently working and… ready for a Midlife Plot Twist?!
This free 12 week course will use music, writing and art to help you increase your confidence and gain clarity about your next step.
Workshops will be held at The Watershed, Slaithwaite (Wednesdays 12-2) and online via Zoom (Fridays 11-12).
To be eligible for a place, you must be:
- A Kirklees resident
- Over 50
- Unemployed or economically inactive (not working)
- Looking to return to learning or employment

Free online courses from WEA
Skills for Volunteers: Monday 7th March, 10am – 12 noon for seven weeks. An introduction to the key skills of communication, assertiveness, time and stress management. It will cover essential knowledge related to policies and procedures including equality, diversity, inclusion, health and safety and safeguarding. Learners will also find out how to find and apply for volunteering opportunities.

Computer Skills for Work and Everyday Life: Friday 4 March, 5.00pm – 7.00pm for seven weeks. for students who want to improve their IT skills and improve their employability skills. You will look at ways to improve your confidence and develop your skills using different IT packages. We will look at using the internet, search engines for information, basic Microsoft Office applications, and using email appropriately. Course reference: C3680455
Making Crotchet Jewellery: Tuesday 26 April, 2.15pm – 4.15pm for four weeks. In this online course students will make some beautiful

Come for a free cup of tea and a chat at the Greenwood Centre in Ravensthorpe between 1.30pm and 4pm on Thursday afternoons to discuss your wellbeing.
The Wellness Service and Community Plus are there to chat with you about your personal wellbeing, as well as having the Green Doctors on hand to discuss your home energy usage and to help you reduce your utility bills, too.
The Uniform Exchange are also providing the opportunity to get a free warm winter coat for your little ones, as well as MAU providing direct access to their dedicated free money and debt management advice line to discuss any concerns you may have with your personal finances.

GLAD (Genetic Links to Anxiety and Depression) Study
Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health disorders worldwide. In the UK, 1 in 3 people will experience symptoms during their lifetime. The GLAD Study aims to better understand depression and anxiety in order to find effective treatments and improve the lives of people experiencing these disorders.
We invite you to take part!
There are 4 simple steps to signing up to the GLAD Study:
- Register for the website and read the information sheet
- Provide consent
- Complete a ~30 minute questionnaire to see if you are eligible
- Send a saliva DNA sample through the post
- Once you have signed up to the GLAD Study, you will be able to see information on the website about a number of optional questionnaires or other research studies that are being carried out. You will be able to choose to take part in these studies should you wish to.
We would like to emphasise that you can stop taking part in the GLAD Study at any time.
